Getting Your DHA License from Kenya: A Guide for Kenyan Nurses

Kenya trains far more nurses than its own health system hires, and the Gulf is one of the destinations Kenyan nurses look at hardest. Most of the DHA licensing journey can be completed from Kenya, without travelling to Dubai first. But Kenyan applicants hit one question earlier and harder than applicants from most other countries — whether your qualification is read as a degree or a diploma — so this guide deals with that first, then walks the sequence.

Start here: which title are you actually applying for?

The UAE's Unified Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) assign you a title based on the qualification you hold, and the two entry titles have different qualification rows:

• Registered Nurse— a bachelor's degree in nursing, minimum three years full-time.
• Assistant Nurse — a diploma of nursing, not less than 18 months course duration.

This matters in Kenya more than almost anywhere, because the country has two mainstream nursing routes. The KRCHN diploma (Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse) is the more common one; the BScN is the university degree, entered either directly or as an upgrade from KRCHN.

Three things soften that, and all three are worth knowing before you spend money:

• Don't guess — get it assessed. The DHA publishes a free Self Assessment Tool on Sheryan that checks your profile against the PQR and needs no documents. Run it before you commit to anything.
• Unusual credentials can be referred.Qualifications not listed in the PQR can go to the PQR Committee, which may review them and grant an appropriate title. An award that doesn't map cleanly is a case to be assessed, not an automatic no.
• The upgrade route exists.Under the PQR, a nurse qualified with a bachelor's degree but licensed as an Assistant Nurse may apply for a title upgrade — provided their experience as an assistant nurse has not exceeded five years. The reassurance: you can do this from home

• The DHA application is online.You create your profile, upload documents and track progress through the DHA's Sheryan portal from anywhere in Kenya.
• The exam is available locally. The DHA exam is delivered by Prometric, and a Prometric test centre in Nairobi is commonly cited as offering it — so you can normally sit the exam here rather than in Dubai. Confirm the current active centres and available seats on prometric.com when you book.

You typically only need to be in Dubai later, once you have an employer and are moving for the job itself.

Your Nursing Council of Kenya paperwork

Everything the DHA and DataFlow ask about your professional standing comes back to the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK), and NCK runs its applications through its Online Services Portal at osp.nckenya.com. Three items do the work:

• Your registration certificate — proof you are on the Kenyan register in your cadre.
• A current practising licence. Kenyan licences are renewed periodically through the portal. An expired licence is a very common and entirely avoidable reason for an application to stall, so check your renewal status before you start, not after.
• Verification for emigration / Certificate of Good Standing. NCK handles verification for nurses working abroad, usually applied for through the portal and completed with a form at the Council. The Council contacts your training institution directly. The sequence, step by step

1. Confirm your title and gather documents

Run the Sheryan Self Assessment, then prepare your core documents, which typically include:

• NCK registration certificate and current practising licence
• Nursing qualification and transcripts — your KRCHN diploma or BScN degree and the academic records from your training institution. The transcript matters: the Authorities use it to work out which disciplines your programme actually covered.
• Verification for emigration / Good Standing from NCK
• Employment and experience certificates from your hospitals or employers
• Passport and passport photo
• English proficiency results if required for your case

Kenyan nursing programmes are taught in English, which often helps, but confirm the current English requirement for your situation on Sheryan.

2. Create your Sheryan account and submit

Register on Sheryan, complete the eligibility step, and upload your documents. Make sure your name is spelled identicallyacross your NCK registration, certificates, transcripts and passport. Kenyan records vary in how the given name, middle name and family name are ordered and abbreviated, and a transcript that reads "Wanjiru J." against a passport that reads "Jane Wanjiru Kamau" is exactly the kind of mismatch that costs weeks.

3. DataFlow Primary Source Verification (PSV)

Your documents go to the DataFlow Group, which contacts your training institution, the NCK and your past employers directlyto confirm authenticity. This is usually the longest stage. Make sure your college or university registrar's office holds current contact details and knows a verification request is coming, and that former employers can find your HR file. 4. Receive your DHA eligibility ID / Authorization to Test

Once eligibility is confirmed and verification is progressing, you receive your DHA eligibility number / ATT. This is what unlocks exam booking — you cannot schedule before it.

5. Book and sit the Prometric exam

Log in to prometric.com, choose your centre and pick your date. Bring a valid original passport whose name matches your booking exactly, arrive early, and expect biometric and ID checks. 6. Pass, register, and activate with an employer

After you pass, your result feeds into your DHA record, allowing DHA registration. The final licence activation step is completed by your Dubai employer in Sheryan once you have a job offer — typically the point at which the move becomes concrete. See what happens after you pass.

A realistic timeline

• NCK verification for emigration: start it on day one; it runs in parallel with everything else.
• Eligibility evaluation: often a few weeks after submitting a complete profile.
• DataFlow PSV: commonly several weeks, sometimes longer, depending on how fast your training institution, NCK and employers respond.
• Exam booking and sitting: once you have your eligibility ID, scheduling depends on available seats.
• Overall: many applicants describe the licensing portion taking roughly 6–10+ weeks end to end, driven mostly by verification speed.

Treat these as indicative. A slow-responding institution can extend things well beyond the range, so start early and build in buffer.

Practical points for Kenyan applicants

• A labour agreement is not a licensing shortcut. Kenya has government-to-government labour arrangements with Gulf states, and recruitment drives get publicised heavily. None of that licenses you: the DHA licenses individuals through Sheryan, against the PQR, with its own verification and exam. Treat any agent who implies a bilateral deal skips those steps as a warning sign.
• Nobody should be charging you to be recruited. Check that any agency is licensed by the relevant Kenyan authority, and be suspicious of anyone who wants payment for a job offer as opposed to the official DHA, DataFlow and Prometric fees you pay directly to those bodies.
• Check your practising licence is current before you begin, and keep it current through the process.
• Reconcile your name everywhere. If you have a maiden-name/married-name difference or inconsistent middle names, prepare supporting documents such as an affidavit or marriage certificate up front.
• Confirm every fee on the official Sheryan portal, DataFlow and prometric.com before paying — amounts and rules change.
